A Caroni businessman who is also a licensed gun owner was able to scare off bandits who tried to break into his home early on Wednesday morning.

Police said businessman's wife was asleep at their Kelly Village, home at 3.08 am when she heard a loud noise.

On looking out the window, she saw six masked men trying to cut a padlock on the gate to get into the home.

The woman called for help and her husband took his pistol and fired a shot, as the bandits fled by jumping onto the roof of a neighbour's home.

Caroni police were called in and found a bolt cutter and crowbar believed to have been used by the bandits to try and enter the home.
